Fire Department

Established in 1942, this all volunteer department includes 35 members responding from 2 fire stations. ECIFD provides Fire, Rescue and BLS protection to 45 square miles of Columbus Township in Bartholomew County. Located 35 miles south of Indianapolis, their district completely surrounds the City of Columbus and includes portions of I-65.

RE-21 is the first-out apparatus for most of ECIFD's calls. This rig includes equipment for firefighting, extrication, rescue,
and Hazmat responses. It also includes a PTO powered 10 KW AMPS generator with tower light.

Engine 22 is the first-due apparatus for most fire calls.
It was refurbished at RPI in 2005 to enclose the cab
and add extra storage compartments onto the back of this rig.

Engine 23 is third out for structure and brush fires. With it's large tank capacity, it is also used for mutual air in the surrounding
rural areas. 23 carries most of the same equipment as Engine 22, but with less hose.

EMS-26 is a BLS non-transport vehicle that includes various EMS equipment for a fast response to medical emergencies.

Ladder 27 serves as the department's aerial device. It was purchased from the City of Rensselaer in 2004. It saw it's first
action at a large commercial fire just days after it arrived. In 2007 it will be refurbished and repainted to match ECIFD's colors.

Columbus Regional Hospital provides ALS reponse for most of Bartholomew County and Brown Counties.
Four ALS units are on duty throughout the Columbus area 24/7 with a 5th unit used for medical transports and backup. While Medics 2
and 5 respond from the hospital, Medic 3 is permanently stationed at ECIFD's Station 221. Medic 1 or 4 calls Station 222 home and two additional ALS rigs are stationed in Brown County to the west.
