The City of Hammond is located just 20 miles southeast of Chicago in Lake County. It is located in the farthest NW point in the state and includes a mix of residential, industrial and commercial buildings. Hammond 's career department includes 180 firefighters that respond to Fire, Hazmat, Tactical Rescue, and ALS calls from 7 fire stations. HFD protects 83,000+ residents over 27 square miles.

Built in 1923, Station 5's single apparatus bay still shows signs of it's history that included horse-drawn engines.
Station 5 was the only station west of the north-south railroad tracks that split the city at one time.

This particular Engine 5 was retired to reserve status in the fall of 2005 and was reassigned as Engine 71. It was replaced
by the former Engine 4 Pierce Dash above.
 
Station 6
Station 6 "The Haunted House" - 2716 169th Street
Also built in 1923, this single-engine firehouse protects the southeast side of the City including Purdue University at Calumet.
The 6's got their nickname because some believe that a deceased Fire Captain haunts this old firehouse.
