The term Quad comes from Triple Combination Pumper. In the early days there were pumpers, hose wagons, tankers, ladders wagons etc, then combination vehicles came along. Triple Combination pumpers are named for having a pump, water tank and hose all on one chassis. A Quad adds a full complement (163/115 feet) of ground ladders, a Quint adds an aerial device (Quints only need 85 feet of ladders in the 1999 NFPA standard). |
