Former Engine 1 - 1941 American LaFrance Pumper - 500gpm/200gal
Engine 1 was bought brand new in 1941 for $6,419.95. It served as a frontline apparatus for CFD until 1961, when a brand new engine was bought. During 1961 through 1978, E-1 was on auxillary status. In 1978, Engine 1 was sold to fomer Chesterton Police Chief Arnold Mauke for $400. Through the years it was used various times as an advertising piece until it was sold to Roger Greiger of Furnessville. From, then on Engine 1 sat in a field owned by Mr. Greiger; exposed to the elements and deteriorating severly. On Friday, May 11, 2007, while Lt. John Jarka, Engineer Brent Valpatic & FF Jamie Hicks were at lunch at Sunrise Cafe a man approached them. He told them about an old fire truck in a field that was about to be scrapped, and thought it was Chesterton's old rig. Lt. Jarka went out to the field that day and it indeed was the old Chesterton Engine 1. On May 12th, Lt. Jarka & FF Hicks with the help of Joe's Towing put Engine 1 on the a flatbed truck and took it to the scales, weighed it and gave Mr. Greigers $525 dollars, the scrap price. Since, it's departure 29 years ago, Engine 1 was on it's way home. CFD is hoping to restore it to it's former glory and us it in parades and fire prevention. The restoration of Engine 1 will be done by CFD members and local businesses on donation funds.

Special Thanks to Lt. Rudy Jimenez & Engineers Steve Himen & Tony Coslet for their help in arranging the apparatus
for these pictures and for providing CFD background and history.
