Portage Fire Department
Station 1 - Headquarters

The Town of Portage is located in between Chicago and South Bend along I-80 in northwest Porter County. This career department responds to more than 3,500 runs each year. PFD's 3 stations provide Fire, Rescue and ALS protection to approximately 35,000 residents.

Completed in August 2001, this new station houses the department's adminstration, training facilities and three apparatus.

Ladder 1 responds as a Quint and has it's own primary Engine Company response area. It also serves as the second aerial
device at PFD.

Setup as a Quint, this truck features an “ergonomic” hose loader in the rear for 1000’ of 5” supply line.

Rescue 1 was the first apparatus in the department to show the new Portage FD logo and a revised color and stripe scheme.

This rig includes roll-up compartment doors to store firefighter's SCBA and turnout gear. It also has a unique feature only
present on a few Braun Ambulance models - a sliding side entry door.

Engine 4 serves as the training/reserve engine at PFD. It is shown here filling in for Engine 2 at a house fire.

Like Fire 2, this apparatus has a full incident command center setup in the back of it.

Fire 2 - 2008 Ford Expedition Command Vehicle - Assistant Chief
Fire 2 serves as the take home vehicle for the Assistant Chief of Fire Operations. It can serve as a command center for a variety of incidents. With its towing capability, it can also pull the departments boat (Marine 1) and the departments Jet Skis (Marine 2 & 3).
This sharp rig includes an all-LED lighting package wired by department members, a Command Center with Accountibility Board,
Landing Zone Light Markers and an AED and BLS EMS Equipment.

Along with Marine 1, these two water vehicles allow for rapid rescue of swimmers and boaters trapped in the water and
waves of Lake Michigan.

2002 Fireblast Live Fire Trainer
Located behind Station 1, this live fire simulator provides firefighters the training experience of performing several different structural
firefighting evolutions under as real as conditions as possible. Portage is one of the only department in the area that provides its own
Fire Academy for training new hires. Portage Firefighters are fortunate to be able to train in this trailer, which was purchased with
the assistance of the federal government through the FireAct Grant program.
