Fire Department

The City of Mount Vernon is located along the Ohio River at the crossroads of IN-62 and IN-69 in southern Posey County. Organized in 1952, the 48 members of this all-volunteer department respond from two stations. BTFR MVFD provides Fire, Rescue and Medical First-Responder protection to the 7,000 residents within unincorporated Black Township and the southern half of Lynn Township.

In 1952, a group of men were organized as the Mount Vernon Auxiliary Fire Department.  Their primary focus was to help the
Mt. Vernon Fire Department.  In 1954 it was renamed Mt. Vernon Civil Defense Fire and Rescue. Contracts were signed with
the township Trustee's office to provide fire protection for Black, Lynn, Marrs, and Point Township.  As Marrs and Point Township
formed their own Fire Departments, Mt. Vernon Civil Defense Fire and Rescue concentrated its efforts on Black Township. The
department was renamed Black Township Fire & Rescue and continues to offer water rescue and mutual aid assistance to nearby
departments in Posey County.
