Koontz Lake is located 25 miles southwest of South Bend in the far northeast corner Starke County. First organized in 1947, this all-volunteer department includes 25 members who respond 250 runs each year. KLFD provides Fire, Rescue and Medical First Responder protection to 36 square miles and 3200 residents of Koontz Lake and Oregon Township. During the summer vacation season, their population grows to 5,000.
Koontz Lake Fire Station – State Road 23 at E. Seneca Lane This firehouse was built in 1967 with a small annex across the street.
Rescue 71 - 1993 E-One Cyclone II (#12677)
This apparatus was purchased from Avoca, Pennsylvania in 2006. R-71 carries Amkus extrication tools, cascade system and
Ice Rescue equipment. Additional Dive Rescue resources are provided by the Starke County Dive Team out of Bass Lake with assistance from the Indiana DNR.

Engine 1 is first-due for fires and accident calls. It also carries medical equipment.

Engine 2 responds as the second-due engine or tanker and also serves as the primary mutual aid apparatus.
